routers; a guide for idiots please

admitting my somewhat limited ( virtually non existant) knowledege of routers and their operation etc, does anyone have a link to an idiots guide to such, please

what might prevent them from working, how they are programed etc

Routers do what they say on the tin: they route network traffic. Most consumer routers come with either an ADSL or a cable modem built in, and most also have wireless so that they can pipe traffic around your house wirelessly.

The headbending technology is these days excellently concealed under the hood of Windows and they're pretty easy to set up. They're configured via your browser and configuration is pretty much limited to entering your ISP and password and enabling security.
