router too far away from bt socket

hi, a workmate has a main pc connected to a d link router/modem and is experiencing dropped connections where the adsl light flashes and goes off every now and then. they've been told by tiscali that their router is possibly too far away from the bt socket and to use a shorter length of wire between the two.

this is simple enough but i've been asked to source the cables and i just want to check i'm going along the right lines. so, should i;

buy eg, 1-2metres rj11 cable tp place between bt socket and router then 10metres rj45? or should i be splitting the difference and getting 6m rj11, 6m rj45?

If you have a choice, go for a short telephone link and a long ethernet link. Ethernet cable (good ones, anyway) are shielded but telephone cable is not.
