Router settings

Hi all,
I've been wireless (some of the time!) using a Netgear DG834g V2 since last August. My service provider is AOL. I have noticed that when the MTU setting = 1453, I get a fantastic signal strength....but as you know AOL does not support this setting and I have to change to 1400 to surf the web. However, when I change to MTU=1400 (required for AOL) the router signal strength is poor and intermittent. Can anyone help me fix this problem....Many Thanks.

I wonder if something as simple as a channel change might cure it.
