Router query

I'm thinking of upgrading to broadband but I'm bewildered by the choice of products. I've researched PIPEX and Metronet and AOL (who I'm currently with). I'm a light user and AOL seem to be the easiest to set up (if not the best reviewed). If I go for one of the others I have to get a modem or router. Should I get a router with built in firewall, or modem and firewall package? How do I know how good the firewalls in routers are?

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, and thanks in advance for any replies.

You only need a router if you want to connect more than one PC to the broadband.
