I'm usually connected to the internet via an ethernet cable. It works find until I switched off my laptop for a few weeks. I cant connect to the internet anymore. When I checked my network connection thru' control panel, my router IP address starts with 82.xxx.xxx.254. The IP address of my router is 192.168.123.254. Tried troubleshooting it by ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew but failed. Any sugggestions? Thanks

Your router has two IP addresses - the WAN (Wide Area Network) address which is allocated by your ISP using DHCP and its own LAN (Local Area Network) address.

The 82.xxx.xxx.254 address is the one allocated to it by the ISP.

The 192.168.123.254 address is its own address in the subnet used for the local network and it will allocate addresses to connected computers in this same 192.168.123.xxx range.

How can I get my IP address to start with 192.xxx.xxx.xxx?

If you mean the computer's IP address, the TCP/IP settings for the network adapter should be set to get the IP address automatically and the router should allocate a 192.168.123.xxx address to it.

What IP address does the laptop have at the moment?

My TCP/IP is set to obtain IP address automatically. The IP address is 82.13.176.70 and the default gateway is 82.13.176.254

<<< The IP address is 82.13.176.70 and the default gateway is 82.13.176.254 >>>

The PC is getting the IP address directly from the ISP which, from the address, would appear to be NTL. Is it possible, if you are using Cable Broadband, that you have plugged the ethernet cable from the modem into one of the router's LAN ports instead of its WAN port, so that it is just functioning as a network switch to connect the modem and PC directly? Presumably you do have a stand-alone "Cable/DSL Router" and are not trying to connect with a combined "Router/ADSL Modem" which is only suitable for ADSL broadband delivered via the phone line?

I plugged in the ethernet cable to the WAN port. I forgot to mention earlier, before I switched off my laptop for 2 weeks, the IP address of my laptop used to be 192.168.123.117. By the way, I'm using a USRobotics router. It didnt say its a modem/router. I assume it should be a stand alone router

Double check that you have the Cable Modem connected by ethernet cable to the router's WAN port and the PC connected to one of its LAN ports.

If the PC still has its 82.13.x.x address, run the IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW commands again to see if it gets the correct LAN address. If not, I would try resetting the router back to factory default settings to see if that solves the problem.

I have reset the router and switching it off and on a few times. Tried IPCONFIG/renew and release but still could not change the IP address.
Tried switching it off and on again and my router could not power on anymore. I guess there was something wrong with the router. I'll purchase a new one and see how it goes
