Rogue desktop links from the web

I occasionally get pop-ups to unsavoury sites during web searches. The other night was worse than usual(although I use Tweak XP Pop-up Blocker)
After a time I disconnected to find over 20 of these links on my desktop. They were easy to delete but I would like to stop them before they get to my PC.How do I stop these links from appearing on my desktop? I also have 3 spurious additions to my favorites, which re-appear when I start IE6 (from hand-book.com).
