i am trying to create a restore point manually but each time it says that it can't be created and to reboot and try again. Still it won't work though. Am i doing something wrong? do i need to be in safe mode or something like that.

You could try some of the suggestions click here

System Restore cannot create a restore point. Please restart your computer

Disable System Restore, reboot, then enable.

Source click here

NOTE: doing this will remove all of your existing restore points.

I assume you are following the route that follows:

START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM RESTORE.

This should bring up a splash screen with instructions and options. I have never had any problems with creating a restore point.

Have you got any restore points listed if you select
"Restore to a previous time"?

Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Thanks guys. Turned out that it was the highpoint driver i had installed. It was a known problem to microsoft. Have sorted it now.
