What I forgot to mention was that I have been very ill since December and only recently have been able to contact and visit PC World where I purchased this printer. Even so, a warranty is for 12 months, so it doesn't matter if the item packs up after 11 months and 3 weeks, it is still under warranty. If your attitude is such and you are a retailer then I pity anyone returning faulty goods to you.
I uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times with the same results, prints but no scan and no copy. My previous multi function device worked perfectly so there is nothing wrong with my PC.
I thank the former retail manager for his advice to get trading standards involved, this I shall do as I have had some success with them previously with a tw*tt of an Arthur Daley type car dealer.

Thanks for your mostly positive advice.
