Replacing laptop Hard Drive

  southpaw 18:37 22 Mar 10

I'm having problems with my hard drive. Now and again it crashes and reboots.

Anyway I've decided I'll buy a new hard drive for it.

1.) How do I check which HDD is in it now?
2.) I'm debating whether to replace the HDD then sell the laptop and look for a new higher spec laptop. Will I be able toput the Operating system back on easily.

Its a Toshiba Laptop about 3 years old with Vista Home.

3.) Is it a fairly easy process to replace the HDD.

Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

Thank you

"Will I be able toput the Operating system back on easily."

Yes if you made a DVD backup of the laptop when new? or you have a Vista DVD and your license key

Wow that was quick!!

You say dvd is the Product Recovery disc that I got with the laptop adequate for putting on a new HDD?

The product recovery disc will restore the machine to "as new" - in other words it will lose anything you have done on the machine since you bought it.

Better to take an image of the hard disk to an external media using any one of a number of backup programs.

depends on how Vista was installed and imaged,

Sometimes the image is on a hidden partition of the drive and the recovery disk is used to access that image.
Other times the image is on the DVD and is copied to the drive when you use it.
Disk copying software can be used to "clone" or image an old drive to a new one (bigger) click here

The best is Acronis but it costs click here
