Replacement on/off switch for laptop.

My HP pavilion ze5354EA laptop has a faulty on/off switch. The replacement cost in the USA is £20, in the UK £80+VAT+postage. All ideas are welcome as to how I may remedy this - I have replaced components on a motherboard with a soldering iron previously! All files backed up!

Hi nutcrusher. If you are sufficiently competent that you have replaced motherboard components, then you may find that you can dismantle and repair or clean the switch. It will only be a momentary contact switch, so unless it is physically broken, it will probably only be dirty contacts that are causing the problem.

Yes thanks, it's looking that way. I'll wait 24 hours to see if any other ideas come up - thanks again.

It will probably be dust, remove clean and replace.
