replacement dvd writer not recognised

i have replaced the dvd rom with a writer on my laptop running xp. on first boot up it says incompatible device press fi....then in my computer no drive is recognised.if i then restart it is recognised at boot up and then shows in my computer ....which means to use drive i always have to boot up twice.....any ideas

Check the drive settings in CMOS (BIOS) are set to auto to detect your drive.

I agree with Fruit Bat, see the documentation that came with your laptop or check the manufactour's website for details on how to alter the CMOS/BIOS settings.
