Repair corrupt exe files in XP

HP has not come to the conclusion that my troubles are caused (ie Outlook 2002 crashes whenever the Contacts button is clicked) is caused by a damaged exe file in XT. However, their only solution is to reformat the hard disk and reinstall XP. This solution is even more unacceptable because my disks are somewhere in a warehouse. Is there no way to detected which file is damaged and replace it?

Start, Run, type

sfc /scannow

and click OK. You may be asked to insert your Windows CD.

I have just had a large, square magnifier appear on screen. No idea where it came from or how to get rid of it.
Restarted computer which seems to have made it disappear.
Anyone know where it came from and how to close it?
