reinstalling XP pro in new pc

I would like to upgrade the motherboard and HDD on my PC. Leaving aside the 'buy a bare bones system' argument, how do I avoid problems when reloading XP in what would effectively be a new machine? Would it be better to retain the existing HDD and upgrade that later and if so would the problems be different? Are there any sites I should look at? I tried M$ but it is as user unfriendly as ever... Any steer would be much appreciated.
