Reinstalling WinXP/SP2 from pre-SP2 Recovery Disk

System becoming unstable (i.e. frequently refusing to start) I want to reinstall the OS. (Yep I've got good backup!) WinXP was preinstalled by manufacturer. Booting from the OEM recovery disk I get the message:
'OS is older than the one installed. Cannot continue.'
Does this mean I have to uninstall SP2 before booting from the recovery disk?

If so, and WinXP will not start . . . it's Catch22!

Thanks VoG - looks promising. There's a lot there to digest. All good stuff - I've run 'scannow' & will let you know if situation improves.

No noticeable improvement. However, it's looking more like H/W failure. I'm posting latest developments in a new thread.
