I've formatted, partioned, extended partitioned and logical drive partioned, reinstalled w2k... now going thro the laborious driver installation:

yellow in device manager for usb - tried reinstalling driver from disc, it says it found a better one, when I click to install it says 'Insert cd labelled 'EHCI driver installation disc'! How can I get round this, I've never had this before.

Have you tried removing the device in safe mode as Removing USB devices in Safe Mode will force the OS to refresh the USB driver stack. You can then log back to normal and let Windows install its own generic driver.
