I had win 98se, but have upgraded to xp. but the copy I used aparently didn't have a valid product key, I got it from an IT dept friend. It didn't seem to be a problem, I just cant instal SP2. Anyway, now I'd like to buy a proper copy, so can I just uninstall the upgrade back to 98se, and then reinstall the new version of xp?

Yes, you can but a better option would be to do a clean install of XP. You can do this, even if you only have the upgrade disk for xp. During the install it will ask you for proof of having Win98 - put in the win98 CD.
