regular virus

Can anybody give ma any advice, as to why I am getting regular virus alerts from Norton, most are Trojans, one that keeps coming up on a regular basis is "backdoor.smother", sometimes Norton can not delete the virus, bcause "access is denied", I then am required to reboot on safe mode, run norton antivirus, and delete the offending virus that way.
I am not too keyed up on trojans etc, so any easy advice would be most gratefully received.

many Thanks
