Regular Crashing of PC

My friend has a 3ish year old Time PC with Windows ME OS. It has started to freeze and or crash with a blue screen error message along the lines of "error writing to c drive", more and more regularly. Sometimes it won't boot up right away and he says it isn't usually a problem if he leaves it a while.
Among some of the things I've noticed were his clock being in the year 2000 and totally out of time and a fair bit of warmth radiating from a CD-ROM that had been in for only a few minutes. When changing the time and date in BIOS, I was unable to change the day.
Can anyone recommend a course of action or recognise any of the signs.
Many thanks in advance.

That the CMOS battery is dead, at least if the clock has reset, that will also reset your BOIS to defaults, there may be other issues at large here, but replacing the CMOS battery is where I would start.
