Please can anyone tell me where to find the registry location for the product key.

This is for Windows 98:

At a command prompt type the following:

FIND.EXE/I "ProductKey" %winbootdir%\SYSTEM.DAT

or go to the following regsitry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version

and look for ProductKey in the right hand panel.

If your version of Windows is different to 98/ME, post back with more details.

I am using XP.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

Write down the series of numbers between your Registered To: and Computer: details, this is your Product ID.

Now call Microsoft and ask them for help. If you have lost or mislaid your CD code, this can be checked by them and authenticated from the above if you call MS.

The actual CD code is not stored in the registry in the way it used to be as one of several anti-piracy measures.
