When ever I boot my system up I get the following message/ warning concerning the Registry Editor. the message appears on my desk top.

Error opening file. There maybe a disk or file system error.

It only leaves one option, that is "OK" the message disappears till the next time I start up.

Any Ideas what the problem is and how do I get rid of it. As far as I can tell the computer is running OK

What version of Windows?

if NOT 2000, Start, Run, type

MSCONFIG

and click OK. In the list of programs loaded at startup, untick REGEDIT.

Your PC may be set to scan the registry at boot for bad entries, and set them right if they're wrong.

If, for some reason, the registry editor (which, if I'm right {and I may not be!} would be the program that is used) developed an error then you'll get the message every time you boot.

If you're using win 98, go start, run and type "sfc" (without " "). This will launch the system file checker, and will check for original Windows file that have been changed or damaged.

If you're not on 98 you can still do it, but I don't know the command.

For WinXP go start> run, then type sfc /scannow
Oh and you'll need the WinXP CD too.

The Version of windows I am running is ME. Does this change any of the solutions

  VoG II 12:32 04 Oct 03

I don't think ME has SFC (System File Checker).

MSCONFIG should work.

However, if this is something that has not always happened, try a System Rrestore back to before it started.
