reformating external hd advice

  windsock 21:23 17 May 09

hi all just bought a western digital 320g passport external hd,i want to get rid of all the preinstalled software that came with it.
Then i want to use it for backing up my photos and music and other bits.
I want to use it between my xp desktop pc and my vista laptop.
My questions are what is best way to reformat and should it be formatted to fat32 or ntfs
any advice please.

If you are only going to access the drive via XP or Vista then NTFS is the way to go, the easiest way to format the drive is to double click My Computer/Computer, locate the external drive in the open window, right click it and in the resulting menu select Format, choose the file system you wish to use, leave the Allocation unit size at the default value and click the start button.

You will notice the option to select a quick format so select this if you wish, there is also a field in which you can type a name for the drive concerned.
