Reformat and partition

Hi - when my last pc was put together (not by me, I hasten to add) the C drive wasn't partitioned, but just had the OS and programs on.

At last the day has come for me to reformat, so my question is, should I have a partition for the OS (XP, by the way) or is there any advantage one way or the other?

Stand by for, 'Help - what have I done and how do I stop it?' questions, please! Although I do have Crossbow7's excellent guide to hand.
