reformat external hard drive

Had my freecom 400gb external hard drive for a week now but undecided about reformatting it.It came formatted as fat 32.Some friends have said reformat to ntfs or you will lose data when transferring, others have said leave it as it is or you will lose data.
Somebody out there please help, what do I do?
I want to transfer stacks of video files and audio files.

You don't need to format it. If youy want to convert it to NTFS click here

if you want to just save data on it leave it as fat 32

otherwise, if u want to put xp on the external hard drive change to ntfs

If it is NTFS then you will be able to cram more stuff on it as the cluster size is smaller than Fat32.

Fat32 is faster to access but wastes more space for the same files
