Reformat?

I have had a lot of trouble in reimaging my hard drive after deleting the partition table with FIXBOOT. Driveimage XML said the drive was not big enough.

I got around this by copying the files from the image onto the drive.

This has partially worked, the machine boots and is operational, but some strange things have happened, such as icons for programs have disappeared, there are NO hidden files, so desktop.ini files appear in many folders such as the start menu. Also, the machine doesn't seem particularly fast considering it has just been reimaged.
Has anybody ever been in this situation before? And am I going to have to format to fix some of these things?

You might just as well reformat and reinstall Windows, at least it will be complete and should work ok.
