reducing fan noise of laptop

Hey guys! I got myself an Acer Ferrari 3000 latelty and I can't recommend it highly enough. There is just one issue that I have with the machine however and it is one that I'm sure I share with many people who have chosen a laptop with a desktop processor-(not that mine is a desktop-it's an AMD though => similar heat problems). I can live with the heat but the fan is on continuously and its noise when I'm in places like the college libraby is highly irritating- is there anything I can do to silence the fan somewhat?

One option would be a laptop stand / cooler which is powered via the USB port; this has a fan (silent) which keeps the laptop cooler and hence has less need for the laptop's own fan to come on.
