Recovery Partition

My Sony VAIO does not have an XP CD Rom. They say all the data is in the recovery partition. I can see this partition in disk management, it seems to have an EISA configuration, but how do I read the data on it. Does this mean I can never re-format my hard drive?

The Vaio has an option to create recovery discs. This also has the advantage of freeing up the space currently used by the recovery partition. My Vaio laptop needed 11 CD's or 2 DVD's to create the recovery media.

The lappy is at work, so I can't remember exactly where the option is.

Hope this helps
