recovery console will not work

Now here is a curious one! Most of us know about using the recovery console to repair the boot files, but ever heard of the recovery console causing a boot error? The story so far: I have installed the recovery console on my hard disk to run as a start up option. If I attempt to run it, however, it starts to load then halts at a blue screen with stop error "inaccessible boot disk". The boot.ini file looks OK:

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptOut
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Otherwise, windows boots up and runs with no problems. Any ideas?

Thanks phono, might give that a try. But I cannot understand how there can be disk errors when windows will boot successfully when not attempting to use the recovery console.

True, how true. (sigh) Oh well, I'll tick as resolved anyway. Cheers phono.
