Recovering photos from SD card

My son has just returned from holiday and has a problem with an SD card of photos. When they are viewed on the camera they are exactly as they should be, but when they are viewed on a computer using a card reader many of them are incomplete, showing only a horizontal band of part of the subject with the remainder being grey. I have tried 2 or free programmes including Zero Assumption and Campic Restor but many of the photos remain incomplete. Does this mean that the pictures are permanently damaged and not recoverable, or does anyone have any further suggestions as to how I might be able to recover these pictures?

Yes, I am afraid those photos have somehow been corrupted - as far as I am aware, there is no way that they can be recovered in full.

Campic Restore, which you have already tried, is one of the best for recovering photos.

Perhaps, and this is just a guess, you might be able to view them properly if you connect the camera directly to the computer.

Another thought - if my suggestion works, you could then take screen shots of each picture!

Give PC Inspector a try.

I recovered a card for me that had been formatted in error.

Its a free download from here PC Inspector

It is easy to recover pics from a formatted drive or card, but Corrupted pics are a different thing altogether, and as I have already said, I don't think it is possible to recover Corrupted pics.

sounds like a sd card fault, as above try viewing them by connecting camera to pc then print or try copying direct while sd is in the camera

Actually it is possible to recover corrupted pics. I did this yesterday using Zero Assumtion. unfortunately they where still corrupted. I had a dodgy folder on my PC causing problems. After a bit of messing around I was eventually able to copy the folder to a compactflash card and then recover a substantial amount of data, but the several Photos causing problems where still corrupt.
