I have lost smart on my hard drive and can not gt it to be located on my Pc's, I disable smart in Bios and it finds it but does not allow me to access this, is there any one out there who can advise on how to recover my files from this hard drive. Have tried to re install XP but hard drive not found.

Can you see the drive in the BIOS?

SMART is nothing to do with your problem. All it is is a failure prediction facility which measures and reports on some parameters to do with possible failure modes. Whether it's on or off won't affect your problem.

If the drive can't be found, then it's probably failed. The reason smart appears to affect things is that smart tries to interrogate the drive to access performance data, and if the drive has failed, that clearly isn't working correctly.

The correct way to recover your files is from the backup you should have made.

Before you actually finally conclude the drive doesn't work, try removing and refitting the cables - or even replacing the data cable.
