recover .chk files

Dear All, inexplicably my Western Digital external hard drive has converted all of my mp3 and jpg and raw files to file(number).chk files. I understand that this is something to do with the scandisk process, but can anyone help in directing me to a piece of software that can be used to return them back to their old state ?

First try simply renaming (only) one of them to the correct extension - then try and open it.

If you can't then I suspect you won't recover any of them. If you can, then you can rename them all back.

There is a good bulk renaming program I use called click here

However my suspicion is that all is lost - sorry. .chk files are usually just file fragments, due to corruption.
