Recording vinyl

I want to record my old albums onto cd. My question is, can I plug a record deck that has a built in pre-amp, directly into my sound card, and use that as the 'amp', or will I have to use an output from the hi-fi's amplifier. I can apreciate that an ordinary plain vanilla flavoured deck probably won't but maybe a deck with a pre-amp might work.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Dave
