recording VHS tape via TV card

I've just installed a Packard Bell PCI TV card to which I've connected my VCR. I've managed to record material well enough on XP's Movie Maker but when I play it back sometimes the sound gets out of sync with the image or comes out distorted and slow. I've set the device on the following settings:'composite video'; 'line-in' and have tried a variety of quality settings, including 'high quality' and 'video for broadband NTSC 768kbps'. I have a Pentium III, 750 processor and 256mb of memory. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?
