Recognising my DVD Drive

Last week my HDD failed (FUJITSU - what else?). I have reinstalled Win98SE from scratch from the DVD Drive on the same IDE(IDE-0) as the new HDD. The DOS recognises it as the Primary slave on boot up. It also sees the CDRW as Secondary master. In Windows the DVD is not there and even a Device refresh after clearing the CMOS doesn't see it! The CDRW is seen as the 'D' drive.

Anyone with any suggestions?

have you tried the dvd as secondary master and the rw as slave

might help

but the system was so unstable after rebuild that I have done it all again from scratch. The result as far as the DVD and CDRW are concerned is the same. On boot-up the DVD is there but it is not recognised by windows (98SE)! I've tried swapping all around to no avail. The DVD seems to have disappeared, I think, from Windows when I loaded the Mobo drivers.
