Realtek High Definition Audio

I have just bought a new desktop pc with Vista Premium. I get only faint sound from speakers. Checked all volume controls and they are okay but they will not increase the sound, Sound is okay through flatscreen monitor. Speakers okay.
Realtek High Definition Audio is what is installed

Having only just bought it, I would suggest returning it for fix. Realtek is on-board sound, i.e. built-in to Motherboard. Or even better, for a few more pounds get them to fit a Sound Card - something like Soundblaster Audigy2.

Do the speakers have a volume control as well or are they passive ?

Are you adjusting the volume from Sounds , or from the Realtek HD Audio section in Control Panel ?

How many speakers does your separate set have ? Are they all being plugged into the correct ports , the Realtek sound set up in Control Panel can tell you which ones should be plugged where . If the monitor speakers are working OK then it must be a problem elsewhere , and not from the sound card .
