When buying DVD RWs can someone explain what all the 32x, 16x etc. means please!

This is the max speed they can be burn at.

This is the max speed they can be burn at for each media.

For example

My CD Writer says its 8x, 4x, 32x

This mean is can write

CDR at 8x
CDRW at 4x
and reads CDs at 32x

Its the same for DVD writers but depends on the media they support..

As Jester2K II says, but some of these are theoretical speeds [bit like the print speed on printers]. There's a lot of info about them here

and to explain the 8x -

this means it writes at 8 times the normal speed.

ie a one hour (60 min) CD will take 5 mins to burn in a 12x writer. It'll take 2.5 mins in a 24x writer etc

So the higher the number the faster they are. Is 8x 4x 2.4x any good for DVD Rw?

Probably. You can't compare the speed number of a CDRW to a DVD Writer. Fastest i've seen is 4x...

Like saying a Ferrari is a fast car and the Space Shuttle is a fast rocket. Both are fast but different scales.

Higher the number the better...
