I have discovered that my version of XP Professional is not quite right!!!
Running dxdiag I discover that I only have Direct X 8 and that some files are corrupt I have tried to upgrade to Directx 9 without success. I have now made a complete backup of my laptop with Norton Ghost and I want to know if I reinstall XP will it cure my problems!!!! Also I need to upgrade to Service Pack 2 but last time i tried it. My whole system failed and it cost me £500 to get the data back of the hard drive.
Any help appreciaed.

This really belongs in the Helproom.

DirectX issues are not uncommon but difficult to fix, as it cannot be uninstalled.
Yes; reinstalling the OS will cure the issues. I would advise doing so before you attempt SP2 again, simply because your OS seems to have some significant issues.
