HP Pavilion on XP. 512Mb fitted to one slot. Second Crucial option was to add 1Gb to the second. Bought the memory from them. When fitted, RAM shows as 960. Swap slots - same. Take out 512 - same. Any reason for this, as it looks as thought the 512 is redundant - I was hoping for 1.5Gb or thereabouts.

I can't help you, but Crucial have a free 0800 number for customer services, who I'm sure will be able to help. You could also try 'Live Chat' at Crucial.

I upgraded my Compaq Tower SR1619UK from 512MB to 2.5 GB via Crucial's advice of 2 x 1GB + old 512MB in 3rd slot. 4th slot free.

Worked fine and immediately

Check your 'max ram'. SIW will easy show you this or Google your model for it.

Thanks. It should take 2Gb. Despite Crucial scanner saying compatible, there is a rider that non matched pairs may not work, so perhaps that is so in my case.

Spoke to a very helpful chap at Crucial (how nice to get through with only one choice to make and no waiting!). Seems that if the chip density on the two modules are different this problem can occur. Shame the scanner didn't pick it up.
