Can anyone advise me which of the following would give me the best results.1 x 1 GB of DDR PC4000 - DDR500or2 x 1 GB of DDR PC3200 - DDR400Presently I have 512mb ram and Win XP home.Reason for upgrade is mainly photo, CAD and DVD work. Thanks
Hi, I would go for the 2Gb.
That depends on your motherboard ?Though ram normaly runs backward compatible, there are known issues with some brands.for example,if your manual states pc2100 266,the pc 4000 and pc 3200 would run at the lower speed of 2100.Try crucial's online scanner for best results click here
Any technical reasons or a hunch. I am not conversant with the figures.
Skidsy,I ran the scanner and it gave me the above options but didn't say which would be best performing.
Just a small word of caution:Though crucial are very good, there scanner has provided some erratic results recently.Do consult your motherboard manual.Like Techno has pointed out,the 2GB would definately be the best bet if the mobo handles this and can take this. Some motherboards, especially outdated ones will need read the 2GB that is installed. The good thing with Crucial is they guarantee there ram and money back if not compatible.
Should read: will not read the 2GB that is installed.
Thanks skidsy, Just trying to find my motherboard spec on the web - no manual. As far as I know it is -MSI (Micro Star) MS-6380E V1.0 (K7T266 Pro2-A).At least the 2GB seems most recommended.
Marginal differences in the speed of RAM are all but undetectable by the human mind unless you are doing work on Video manipulation.More important is the amount of RAM.Why not add 1GB and accept 1536MB at the, ever so slightly, lower speed of your current RAM
I believe your mobo supports upto pc 2700 333,so therefore your scan results provided by Crucial, the 4000 and 3200 would be running backward compatible.
Just found the same info. So crucial scan is not that accurate. I will go for the cheaper PC2700. Thanks for all your help.
