ram speed question - memory upgrade

I used a link helpfully supplied yesterday to understand my system spec and potential RAM upgrades.
Unfortunately the scan result was "No compatible upgrades".
According to the scan I have 512MB of DDR PC2700 using 2 of 3 available slots, and a maximum memory capacity of 1536MB.
The website offers 1GB upgrades of DDR PC2700, so why would this not be OK?
Also, I still don't know what speed will be OK, or whether I can mix what I have with new (faster RAM).
Any advice please?
Thank you.

It sounds as though each slot will only support one 512MB module, united offensive, therefore you can't use a 1GB module in any one slot.

Thanks Maj. I have 4 slots, 2 orange with 256 in each, and 2 purple unused.
How can I upgrade? Ditch the 2 256 cards and replace with 2 512 cards in the orange slots?
If so, is the speed important?
Thank you.

Also, it's impossible for us to say for sure whether faster RAM will work okay on your Motherboard. **NORMALLY** the faster RAM is backward compatible and will work okay, but at the slower speed. It might be better if you 'phoned Crucial and asked their customer services, they are very good. The number is a freephone number: 0800 013 0330

OK Maj, I will talk to cruicial.
I appreciate your help.

No worries, united offensive, what is the make and model of your motherboard by the way?

  united offensive 12:24 03 Jan 08

According to Cruicial scan:
Make: Gigabyte Technologies
Model: nVidia-nForce2
With AMD Athlon Model 10, Stepping 0
CPU speed 1094MHz

I have a Radeon 800GTO graphics card too, but I guess its at least 2 years old.

Do you think my system spec is a bit low/old now?
It runs Doom3 fairly well, and COD UO. in 1024x 1076 (something like that).
