I have an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe motherboard, I had 2 GB memory installed, and the system showed 2GB on start up. I have istalled a further 2 GB of memory, however only 2688MB is showed as available and 1408 MB as appropriated. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. Can anyone explain why i don't have 4GB memory available please.

If its 32bit only 3.5GB can be used by the system. How much ram does it have in the bios?

32 bit operating systems can only support 2.5GB memory or so.

Are you using a 32 bit ot 64 bit operating system?

Appropriated?? - You mean the full amount doesn't show up where exactly?

Some motherboards cannot detect or use maximum installable RAM. I can't find the reference right away, I'll keep looking.

See your motherboard user manual page 2-15

click here to download the user manual if you don't have one. (note 6.2MB pdf)

Do you have two graphics cards running on a 32bit system?

If you do then windows can just see 4Gb of ram in a 32bit system. It will then deduct the ram used in the graphics cards and if you use two cards then it will affect 2 sticks of ram.

click here Crucial tells you that the motherboard may just read 3Gb or less.
