Ram Not Recognised?

Hi there,
I recently put an extra 1gb stick of ddr2 ram into my computer (all at PC4300). At first it seemed to pick it up fine, and on my pc summary it says 2048MB. A couple of weeks passed and i realised that i needed to do some checks, so i completed the "Reliability and performance" test in windows vista.
I noticed thats under memory it reads only 1185mb available. I swear i remember seeing this somewhere else too. What can i do? how can i make my pc use the full 2gb?.
My Specs are:
2GB DDR2 RAM (2x512MBDDR2PC4300)(1X512MBDDR2PC4300)
AMD Athlon 3500+
160GB HDD
Geforce 7600GS
Thankyou very much

Hi, did you notice how much Memory is being used? Add the two together then see if it is anywhere near 2Gb.

Hi technotiger, thanks for the reply, i ran the test again to try and get this figure but all i could see was bites in use. Also the available ram went down to 968mb.

How many bites in use?

Mean=28 Minimum=28 Maximum= 29

Hmm, not quite what I meant ...

1Gb = 1024 Mbytes
1Mb = 131072 Bytes

The computer will always be using some of your 2Gb of memory, even when you are not doing anything with it. If it says 1185Mb available, then it is using 853Mb - total 2Gb.

Some processes, especially Games, use more memory than others. As long as your My Computer/Properties shows 2Gb, then your memory is being recognised.

oh i understand now, thankyou. I play games a lot and i am getting quite a bit of frame rate drop on games liek STALKER, any optimization tips? i have an overclolcked 7600GS

MyComputer>Properties>Advanced>Performance>Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Change and Increase the amount of Virtual Memory. This is where the PC uses unused space on your hard drive and pretends it is extra memory.
