hi,

i'm trying to sort some more ram out for my dell dimension 8200.

i've checked on the dell site and it looks like it takes:

RIMM 184-PIN - RDRAM - 800 MHz

for 2x 512mb chips dell wants £663.83 ex vat!

i've tried crucial and they dont sell it (not enough demand).

can anyone suggest somewhere i can get this ram? its looking like i'd be better off selling the machine and buying a new one fully loaded that getting one stick for this one!

cheers,

jake

Is that Rambus RAM? If so, then it will be rather expensive. Dell seems to be asking quite a price for it though...

Kingston want £238 per 512 MB stick...

Buy a new motherboard which does not use Rambus RAM.

P.S. When I got an 8200, Dell were giving away free RAM! I didn't realise what a bargain that was.

Just be careful upgrading a Dell machine; they used to use non-standard PSUs with connectors which would not work on other mobos...

Before going ahead with a mobo upgrade... buying a new pc might be a better option.

My 12:17 posting should have said euro356 - the Euro sign doesn't seem to come up on these pages. €€€€

new motherboards? holy hat, thats a bit drastic!

i too went for the 'free' ram thing when i bought the dell. looking back, should have gone for 1 gig option... but that was 2001 and i didnt know what i do now.

the options seem to be:

1 - buy a new pc that takes ddram (i got a dell 8300 off ebay a while back for home; fully stocked with drives and ram for £500! thats cheeper than 1gig of ram for this one...)

2 - bite the bullet, sell the business and buy the ram.

3 - change the motherboard.

dont know about you lot but i feel like i've been had over a barrel...

thanks for the info, really appricate it,

now going to cry somewhere,

jake
