Raid 1 advice

Starting to worry about what would happen if the HDD failed. I was going to buy a second internal HDD to do backup images to, but now I have heard about mirrored raid. Am I right in thinking this means if one HDD fails you can still operate from the other and no data are lost? And then you just replace the failed drive and the mirror is rebuilt?

Sounds too good to be true. Any disadvantages? Do the disks have to be identical? Could I add it retrospectively to my single HDD or do I have to set it up first and install everything from scratch?? So all I'd need is 1 or 2 HDD's and a pci raid controller?

Thank you Bela but that still doesn't answer all the queries I am in the same situation as Keef and am not sure EXACTLY how to go about it. A little more detailed info might help ? Thanks...
