Vist blackviper click here you will find a useful guide as to what services start up by default and which are safe to shut down. At your own risk of course but all steps are reversible, no deletions required.

Note this this is a different area to the advice above which concentrates on possibly unnecessary programs such as graphics controls or office starter programs which when installed like set themselves to load automatically too.

Another way of speeding start up is to clean up and defrag regularly - some programs are btter than others

There's a registry cleaner in ccleaner too - this might speed thing up a bit but do a backup before implementing any of the recommended deletions
