EEC RAM is for use in multi CPU mobos, non-parity if for everyday use and most mobos where the error checking isnt so crucial.
So I wouldn't need ECC if I were planning to build a new PC with a Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading?(So does that mean the 64Meg x 72 specification is larger to cope with the additional error checking?)
Yes, the extra 8 bits are for the error checking.No you don't NEED it, and it is more expensive, but it is also more reliable - that's why it's used in "mission- critical" systems. The ECC can actually correct certain memory errors, whereas non-parity doesn't even do error checking!
but the fact remains that your motherboard has to be capable using it which most mobos are not.If you get errors through your RAM you are pushing it too hard anyway.
