A quick networking question.

I read somewhere that some versions of linux can be set up to act as a router. There was no mention of any hardware requirements (except for NIC's in each machine and some cat5 cable), so I was wondering, is there a program out there that would allow you to set up a 'software' based router on a WINDOWS machine without needing any additional hardware?
