Q817287 Hotfix

  Happy1 23:06 23 Apr 03

I removed Hotfix Q811493 as it caused system slow down when opening Apps. Like a lot of people. Windows update keeps trying to reinstall I just uncheck. But it also is trying to give me Q817287 which cant be removed if I agree to it. Does anyone know if this update is OK or not please?

The Q817287 prevents update errors and i see no reason why it would cause harm. I have it installed and all is fine.

The Q811493 well are you using Auto update?

Select the auto updater to tell you if updates are availaable and just deselect this update.

Many thanks. I'll do that right now. Yes I have Autoupdate enabled but it does give me the choice to install or not.

Q811493 slowdown problem but still advise installing it! They are investigating an 'alleged' slowdown of WinXP machines caused by this update, and suggest calling their helpdesk if a problem occurs. This is subject to a charge I believe. TC.

I must let a friend running Win2000 know about this. TC.

It's all very well Microsoft advising everyone that they should install Q811493 but I am not prepared to tolerate the slowdown I experienced with my PC - which is not 'alleged' - it really did slow down.

Can I just jump in and ask how do I stop auto update from doing its stuff, as I have a very similar problem to Happy 1.

  hoverman 08:16 24 Apr 03

Right click on My Computer, select Properties and then click on the Automatic Updates tab. Choose your option from there.
