Publisher 2002 creating a table

I use Microsoft Publisher 2002, with Windows XP. If I create a table in Word, I can adjust the width of the columns without changing the overall width of the table. But this seems impossible in Publisher - adjusting column widths changes the overall table width. What I want to be able to do is lock the overall table width, then fiddle with the individual colums. Currently I move my tables into Word, get the column widths and table size right, then move it back into Publisher. But can I do the whole thing just in Publisher? All ideas welcome!
