PS3 and dvd's

Sorry guys not strictly computer related but is connected wirelessly.

Christmas prezzie to the boys and an annoying dvd issue.

Ok everything is fine except when trying to play a normal dvd (retail disc) or burnt dvd, this system just displays a no signal on the tv requiring a hard reset from the wall socket.

This is connected via hdmi and have also tried scart...same thing happens.

Blue Ray films are perfect as are the games.
Wireless is brilliant...just an issue with dvd's.

Its not the media at fault here as ive tried many variations.

Anyone got a ps3 and know of a setting i may have missed ?

All advice welcome and greatly appreciated .

1080p is unticked by default (well was here).
