Protected AAC Audio

I have purchased online from the Apple Store several tracks. When I obtained the file information it showed they were Protected AAC Audio & I am restricted from converting to MP3 - although in the file extension to My Music they appear to be M4P. I really purchased for using as background music on my extensive family sideshows - but I can't in their present file status. Also when my wife finally gets her iPod will this AAC format download & play when we synchronise.
Was in the new Apple Store in Regents Street on Saturday - very impressive!!
